Blockbuster flips to loss on higher spending

(Reuters) - NEW YORK, July 26 - Blockbuster Inc. , the No. 1 U.S. movie rental chain, returned to a quarterly net loss on spending to enable its online DVD rental service to grab market share from rival Netflix Inc .



Blockbuster reported a second-quarter loss of $35.3 million, or 20 cents per share, compared with a profit of $68.4 million, or 31 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

whose shares are having unusual price changes in U.S. exchanges
today. Stock symbols are in parentheses after company names.
Share prices are as of 10:45 a.m. New York time.

Atmel Corp. (ATML US) gained 9 cents, or 1.6 percent, to
$5.80. The maker of chips for mobile phones and DVD players said
first-quarter net income was 6 cents a share, more than the 3-
cent average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

Blockbuster favors Blu-ray DVDs to HD DVD

(Reuters) - Of some 8,000 stores worldwide, about 250 of them carry both formats, and Blu-ray rentals are "significantly outpacing HD DVD rentals," the company said in a statement.




Blockbuster rivals such as Movie Gallery Inc. and online rental company Netflix Inc. also offer both Blu-ray and HD DVD formats.
